Why do We Overeat & How to Stop Doing This?

What you need to know about the three types of eating disorders (plus a test – are you affected).

Over the past decades, a thinness boom has seized us, and with it a thousand diets, nutrition systems, magic cocktails, workouts and exercise machines have appeared. It would seem that we all should have long ago reached our ideal form and forgotten about clothes that hide flaws, posing and complexes. But for some reason this did not happen. According to the World Health Organization, the population of developed countries is getting thicker every year. Moreover, those who achieve excellent results on diets and sports for some reason lose them over time. What is the reason?

The problem is that all the currently popular tools involve manual power management – calculating calories, weighing foods, and exhausting workouts through “I can’t”. This approach is based solely on willpower, which is elevated to a cult. But willpower is the end product. The physiology of the body is such that it does not perceive diet and dietary cuts for the reason “I want to be like Kate Moss.” For the body, this is a signal that the crop has disappeared, animals have disappeared, cataclysms have begun, and it begins to fight for survival, literally requiring the brain to find food and eat. So for the first time, we break down, feel weak-willed rags and feel guilty. Again, we limit our diet, we work out the glaze in training, and again we break down. The cycle is endless and leads to the fact that relations with your own body are gradually lost. It starts to seem to us

We eat what is written in the nutrition program and at the time indicated there, carefully think out what to eat next time and constantly twist in our heads “was my lunch right?”. But in childhood everything was different … We didn’t think about food for hours, then we ran into the kitchen, ate tasty food, didn’t eat, if we didn’t feel like it and ran on to play. We did not need any training ─ we moved a lot ourselves. Someone carried all these basic body settings in a year and became that same witch-friend who eats everything and does not get fat. It is from her that we should learn nutrition. But in order to do this, you need to understand what is wrong with your own nutrition ─ where is the failure and how does the passion for overeating (and, after that, overweight) arise?

Proper (adequate) eating behavior is nutrition to satisfy hunger and inner need. Power to a comfortable saturation level. If there are other reasons to start, it will be a deviation leading to excess weight. In general, all deviations can be reduced to three types.

Restrictive type
You can always accurately diagnose any product: this one is good, and this one is bad, that one is useful, and you need to eat it, but you don’t need a bad one, but it’s so tasty that … Trying to never eat certain foods again leads to the fact that they begin to be perceived as “rare” and “scarce”, which can be eaten only on holidays, which means they become very desirable. So we ourselves form the hyper-significance for us of buns and chocolates. And once, when willpower loses its vigilance, a breakdown will occur. A breakdown turns into a zhor, then comes a feeling of guilt and a promise to eat the next day less and work out all the sins in the hall. Then again a breakdown, guilt and restriction. Social type
If I give you a box of delicious sweets, you won’t calm down until you eat all of it. You don’t have delicious food at home; everything is eaten right there. Of the guests, where the hostess prepares a lot and tastes delicious, you do not go out, but roll out. If this is all about you, then you are a social eater. The reason is the same – the division of products into good and bad and the presence of prohibitions. Any social situation becomes an occasion to eat (and you eat a lot, as a relative from a hungry land). That’s because you know: now I eat, because tomorrow it will be impossible – tomorrow there will be a diet.

Emotional type
Stress is a signal for the body in the spirit of “fight or run”, which is very important for survival. For example, you hunted in the woods and met a wild boar. Who knew that our lives would become so safe and useful stress would turn into corporate wars and squabbles with mother-in-law? And if you run away from a boar, then there is no one from a bad boss. The stress mechanism does not imply the ingestion of food into the body: all the blood is sent to the brain to solve the problem, and the appetite disappears. But when stress is prolonged and social, the mechanism begins to fail. And now we are eating, when it’s sad, and boring, and nervous, and insulting. We eat if we are angry, we eat when we are annoyed, we eat when we are afraid of something. We eat and gain weight.

The presence of one or more deviations in eating behavior eloquently indicates that you have no friendship with the body, that you have lost contact with it, that you cannot be in good shape, and you have to constantly worry and think about your weight, food and fitness.

Here are 10 questions. There are only two possible answers: Yes or No. Answer questions quickly and without hesitation.

Do I often eat without hunger?
Do I often overeat and feel heavy in my stomach?
Do I eat when I’m sad, bad, scared?
Do I eat when I’m very nervous?
If they give me a box of delicious sweets, I won’t calm down until I eat all?
When I pass the pastry shop, do I really want to go in and buy something tasty?
Do I often leaf through photographs of other women and compare myself with them?
If I were more slim, would my life be happier and more interesting?
Do I often feel guilty about eating something wrong?
Will I refuse to participate in a beach party because the other guests will be thinner and prettier than me?

Results:

For each answer “No” we accrue 1 point to ourselves, for each answer “Yes” ─ 0 points.

The result is 9 or 10 points: unbelievable, but you and your body are real friends. You are on the right track, because you look at things quite wisely.

Result 5-8: you have fights with the body, which is something to hide. But there are good points too. If you pay more attention to your perception and basic tools (hunger, satiety, inner need), cosmic results await you.

The result is below 5: your relationship with the body is “commodity-money” ─ you should be a good guy and do not ask for sausages, and I, as it is, will not spread rot and scold you. Most likely, you know firsthand what a vicious circle “diet-stall-diet” is, and you are very tired of it. Do not worry, everything can be fixed. You were born to be slim and happy, and this is possible if you work with your head and the setting of eating behavior.
