Doctors warn the Irregular Working can Cause Thyroid Diseaseadmin
Scientists from South Korea for the first time found a link between overwork caused by too long work, and the risk of hypothyroidism.
The authors of the publication in the Journal of the Endocrine Society , employees of the National Cancer Center in the South Korean city of Goyang, analyzed data on the health status and working conditions of 2 160 adult citizens of the Republic of Korea.
The authors found that among participants whose studies had to work every week for 53-83 hours, hypothyroidism was 2 times more frequent than subjects who had a working week of 36 to 42 hours.
In the first group, hypothyroidism was detected in 3.5% of participants, and in the second – in 1.4%.
Scientists also emphasize the fact that, while in the general population hypothyroidism more often affects women, in this case, the risk of developing it due to overwork was the same in both men and women.
About two years ago, in 2018, a law was passed in the Republic of Korea limiting the maximum working week to 52 hours (previously 68 hours). Scientists believe that, thanks to this law, a decrease in the incidence of hypothyroidism in the country can be expected.
