Usually, people get enough of this vitamin as a result of direct exposure to sunlight from April to September. But prolonged self-isolation can interfere with this method of delivery of such an important substance. Experts recommend consuming vitamin D during a pandemic along with food and supplements.

The best food sources of vitamin D are fatty fish (salmon, tuna, sardine), chicken eggs, dairy products (kefir, fermented baked milk), champignons, beef liver, butter.

Its other supplier is supplements.

“When access to sunlight is limited, getting the right amount of vitamin D from food alone is difficult. During self-isolation, I would recommend everyone take supplements with him, ”said Rob Hobson, head of the Healthspan nutrition department.

The doctor advises when choosing supplements with vitamin D to choose those that contain at least 10 mcg.

At the same time, it is important not to exceed the recommended daily intake of the nutrient. According to official EU guidelines, the top safe vitamin level is 100 mcg (4000 IU) per day. Excess vitamin D can cause side effects due to disturbances in calcium metabolism – headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, palpitations, and fatigue.
